October: Featured Artist

The Ouachita River Art Gallery's featured artist for October is painter Joyce Beauvais of Farmerville, La. The theme of Joyce's show is ALL SAINTS - CEMETERIES.

As a New Orleans native, Joyce played in area cemeteries as a child. She and her family visited the resting place of her grandmother and great grandmother in a cemetery in Slidell. In Joyce's eyes, this was a magical place, not a scary place. There was a cross in the middle of a little island, surrounded by a moat. There was a small chapel, graves above the ground, old oak trees, and stairs going over a brick fence.

Joyce lived a number of years in Lacombe, where the tradition of lighting candles on graves is one of two places in Louisiana where this tradition is still carried on. In south Louisiana, tradition requires families to clean and white wash family graves at this time of the year. Flowers are placed on the graves for All Saints Day.

Drawing upon her roots, Joyce has painted a series of cemetery paintings. It is very fitting for this exhibit to be held during the month of October, as All Saints Day is drawing near.

Joyce hopes these paintings set a mood in the eyes of the beholder that is not depressing, but just as magical as these places were in the eyes of that long-ago child of South Louisiana. Joyce now lives on Lake D'Arbonne in Farmerville, Louisiana.
