The Ouachita River Art Gallery's featured artist for January is Donna McGee of West Monroe, Louisiana. Donna is currently Head of the Department of Art at Grambling State University.
The paintings in this exhibition emphasize the use of repetition and variety to create visual rhythms. Working from drawings, McGee creates the image by layering the primary colors to build values. She states, "My goal is to let the process speak as much as the subject so that, in essence, the subject becomes a vehicle for artistic expression." The resulting image is hard edged and plastic, but retains a reference to reality.
Donna believes that the artist should approach the work as an intellectual pursuit not as something decorative. The work should have a life beyond the surface image. It should be a creative investigation that explores ideas, thoughts, and/or feelings. According to McGee, "The art created by artists throughout the ages has the ability to speak to us of past lives; the beliefs, desires and struggles of those who lived them. As an artist I feel like I am a part of something that has the ability to continue to reach out across time. I cannot choose to not be an artist."
McGee holds a Bachelor of Science in Art Education from Mississippi State University, a Masters in Counseling from Mississippi State University and Master of Fine Arts in Studio: Painting and Drawing from Louisiana Tech University. Her oil, watercolor, and mixed media works have been included in numerous regional and national exhibitions including the Taos Watercolor Society's 7th Annual Exhibition of American Watercolor, Taos, NM; the Mississippi Watercolor Society's Grand National Exhibition, Jackson, MS; the Society of Watercolor Artists 20th Annual Juried Exhibition, 2nd International Exhibition, and 26th Annual Juried Exhibition in Ft. Worth, TX; and the Masur Museum's 28th International Juried Exhibition in Monroe, LA; and Louisiana Watercolor Society's 37th Annual International Juried Exhibition, New Orleans, LA
To be a dynamic visual arts center for the community and public. To be a group of artists expressing and experiencing an awareness of art expression in all media. To be an avenue for the public to experience a growing knowledge of the visual arts. To be an encouraging factor in development in upcoming artists.
